PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform duties in the operation and maintenance of an assigned treatment plant to produce potable water or treat wastewater/stormwater in accordance with state, federal and local guidelines.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. 
  • Performs general operational duties of the treatment plant; monitors plant operations;  monitors plant operations; makes routine checks and visual inspections of mechanical equipment for operational status; and performs daily operational tasks including washing filters, calibrating chemical pumps, reading gauges, running sludge press, and filling chemical tanks.

  • Collect samples; and delivers samples and/or performs assigned water quality tests.

  • Monitors the rate of chemical feed and water flow; monitors gauges, meters, filter press,  and control panels; changes tanks; washes filters; adjusts chemicals; and makes equipment and/or control adjustments as necessary.

  • Records work activities in daily log; completes lab sheets;  and maintains appropriate documentation.

  • Works with Chief or Senior Treatment Plant Operators to receive training.

  • Consults Chief or Senior Treatment Plant Operators when significant decisions regarding operations must be made.

  • Performs routine maintenance and preventative maintenance as assigned; performs general cleaning/janitorial work and grounds keeping duties; and performs routine painting as needed. 

  • Provides assistance to maintenance crew as needed/assigned

  • Visually inspects plant and all equipment daily to ensure proper functioning.

  • May operate heavy equipment to load and remove waste.

  • Attends appropriate training seminars/workshops/meetings

  • Receives off-hours emergency and maintenance calls; and directs calls to on-call System Operations Center personnel.

  • Ensures that all work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner and that plants are running safely and efficiently.

  • Works various shifts as assigned by supervisor; may be called in as necessary in the case of other operator illness or emergency.

  • Adheres to personal and departmental compliance with all state safety regulations and HWU safety policies.

  • Maintains availability to respond to emergencies 24 a day, 7 days a week.

  • Maintains a positive attitude with team/unit.

  • Regular and Predictable attendance is required.

  • Maintains good public relations.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs other related duties as required.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED; with additional training in water treatment plant or wastewater treatment plant operations preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. This job requires progression towards
a Class IV-A Water or Class IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification as directed. A valid driver’s license is also required.  This position requires the ability to pass a pre-employment physical as well as drug and alcohol screens as requested.  Candidates will be required to comply with all state safety regulations and HWU safety policies.

Mathematical AptitudeRequires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

ADA COMPLIANCE:

Physical AbilityTasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light to medium work, typically involving some combination of climbing stairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents or toxic agents.
