JOB TITLE:  UTILITY SYSTEM WORKER - Check position availablility.
 
DEPARTMENT:  System Operations Center
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:
  Utility System Team Leader
WAGE: 
Non-Exempt
 
JOB OBJECTIVE:
To be knowledgeable in the assigned area of Henderson Water Utility’s operations in order to effectively install, repair, and maintain either the water, wastewater, or stormwater lines.
 

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

  • Assume the tasks of a Utility System Team Leader on the job at the request of the System Operations Supervisor

  •  Maintain proper inventory and make sure necessary equipment is available for jobs

  • Keep appropriate documentation

  • Assist with GIS data collection as needed

  • Supply information to Engineering to keeps maps current

  • Maintain and repair lines and test new lines

  • Assist in locating lines, leaks, valves, and manholes

  • Repair lawns, sidewalks, and roads after repair or construction

  • Ensure that safety equipment is used properly at all times and that work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner

  • Operate, service, and maintain backhoe, trucks, and other equipment

  • Carry pager for standby duty as assigned

  • Be available for emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

  • Perform other duties as assigned/needed

  • Maintain a positive attitude with team/unit

  • Maintain good public relations (interact with the public in a courteous manner)

In addition to the above duties, Utility System Workers are required to perform specific duties within their assigned areas as follows:

Collections:

  • Install sewer lines, taps, manholes, and work with concrete

  • Operate the wash truck, vacuum truck, roto-rooter machine, and snake

  • Raise, lower, and construct manholes

  • Clean and maintain intakes

Distribution:

  • Install new water mains and services

  • Maintain, install, and pressure check fire hydrants

  • Install and remove water meters and meter boxes

  • Change hanger heads on copper setters (meter hanger)

  • Raise and lower meter box rim and top as needed

Stormwater:

  • Construct, clean, and maintain stormwater intakes and transmission lines

  • Operate the wash truck, vacuum truck, roto-rooter machine, and snake

  • Construct and maintain stormwater runoff ditches, creeks, and other conveyances

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Needs to develop leadership qualities and the ability to act in appropriate supervisory capacities.  Must know the day to day operation of the Systems Operation Center services.  Must be able to operate heavy equipment.  Needs to be able to apply basic mechanical rules and principles.  Needs to be able to follow symbolic/diagrammatic systems.  Needs to be able to lift heavy loads.  Needs numeric ability sufficient to estimate and apply simple formulas.  Needs to have quick sensory and physical responses and good coordination.  Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team/unit.
 
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or GED required

PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:
Pass alcohol and drug screening test.  Based on pre-employment physical examination and demonstration through job performance is physically able to perform the essential functions of the position.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential tasks.
 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
As assigned by supervisor.
 

LICENSING OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid driver's license.  Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with "N" endorsement required within 6 months of start date.  Fork truck certification may be required.
