GIS

HWU has made a large investment incorporating our collection/distribution system information into the City/County GIS.  The information contained in that system is updated as new lines are installed and old lines are located by GPS.  The information shown is imperfect, but is the best we have available at present.  While we do not guarantee the information shown, we have made it available on the City/County web portal.

GIS information is not a substitute for 811 location, nor should it be used for design of facilities.  It is presented as what it is: the best information available in a readily useable format.  See the disclaimer, here.

What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. HWU utilizes ESRI’s ArcGIS software products for our GIS needs.

GPS

HWU utilizes GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technology to collect accurate geospatial positions allowing us to update the GIS to accurately represent the actual ground locations of assets.  Accurate GIS data is critical in assisting field crews during locates ,service requests, routine maintenance repairs, and emergency repairs.

(The Trimble R10 is a survey-grade GPS unit that can record centimeter position accuracy.  We use survey-grade GPS to record the spatial location of all new construction as well as updating the location of existing assets)

(The Trimble GeoXH 6000 is a mapping grade GPS unit capable of collecting spatial locations at sub-foot accuracy in real-time.  Using ESRI’s ArcPad software, users can collect spatial and attribute information on assets in a mobile GIS type environment.)
